The Patriots did not so much draft Tyler Loop as overpay for him, 70 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
On value alone, Trapilo makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Aireontae Ersery in the 38th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Tre Harris at par in pick 45, which is nothing to complain about. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Elijah Arroyo at No. 69, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They did well to land Maxwell Hairston in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Ozzy Trapilo at pick No. 105 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Raheim Sanders at pick 145 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jordan Hancock in the Round 7 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Jamon Dumas-Johnson in the 222nd pick, a step better than break-even. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tonka Hemingway well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value said wait; Tyler Loop in slot 240 says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
