The Tim Smith selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 93 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
That Ford pick is the receipt they will wave around later. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They will answer for taking safety early while edge rusher, cornerback and other spots went begging.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 23 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 41st pick, and that is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
By-the-book stuff, Calen Bullock at Round 2, Pick 11 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Byron Murphy II slid further than he should have, and slot 73 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Shilo Sanders in the 109th overall pick leaves edge rusher, cornerback and other spots for later.
A wild overpay on Cameron Ward in pick 116, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ricky Pearsall slipping to pick No. 135 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Tyler Guyton, who had no business lasting to the Round 5 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sincere Haynesworth this early at the 187th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They barely believed it either: Jaylan Ford still on the board at Round 6, Pick 42. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A slide stopped in the 219th overall pick, with Tony Grimes worth more than the price. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
Eric Gentry at pick 230 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Carson Steele at slot 234 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Xavier Truss, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
A big swing on Tim Smith at pick 244, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
