The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Devontez Walker, the No. 48 name on the board, sitting there at the 85th pick like a gift left on the doorstep. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The Packers indulged a want in Bishop while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a sticky cover corner, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. a notch or two before his time. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steal is underselling it; Jordan Morgan at No. 57 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Devontez Walker in slot 85 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 29 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tykee Smith in the 96th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Max Melton at the 125th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A want over a need in pick 135: Cole Bishop adds a safety while edge rusher, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
They barely believed it either: Josh Proctor still on the board at pick No. 203. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Miyan Williams in slot 217, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for De'Corian Clark here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Daequan Hardy at the 242nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Steele Chambers at pick 246 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
