The Raiders did not so much draft Roman Hemby as overpay for him, 145 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

Fernando Mendoza is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Getting Stukes where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.1 · Pick 1 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In the 1st pick they get the arm they will build around. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 48
Lee Hunter in pick No. 36 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Emmanuel McNeil-Warren · S · rank 51
A quiet steal in pick 67: Emmanuel McNeil-Warren for less than the market said. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Ted Hurst · WR · rank 89
They let Ted Hurst come to them and pounced at the Round 4 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Treydan Stukes · CB · rank 96
Treydan Stukes at the 117th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Dametrious Crownover · OT · rank 143
Dametrious Crownover at No. 134 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Louis Moore · S · rank 164
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Louis Moore at the 175th pick is the proof. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R6.8 · Pick 189 · Riley Nowakowski · TE · rank 214
They reached into another round for Riley Nowakowski, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Roman Hemby · RB · rank 353
Roman Hemby at No. 208 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Behren Morton · QB · rank 316
This one needs a full-page explanation: Behren Morton in slot 219, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.10 · Pick 226 · Eli Heidenreich · WR · rank 239
They paid up for Eli Heidenreich at the Round 7 slot when waiting would have done the job. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
