The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 6 slot on Hayden Hatten a full 101 spots early. Put together, it is a D-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 10 they get a cornerstone up front, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In pick No. 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in No. 56. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Xavier Legette in Round 3, Pick 8 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Blake Corum slipping to slot 87 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
D.J. James in the Round 3 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 107, where Zak Zinter graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Javon Foster at Round 4, Pick 11 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at slot 119. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nelson Ceaser in pick 120 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A minor need, but a need all the same.
De'Corian Clark in the 124th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Joe Milton III was still sitting there in the 182nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Hayden Hatten at No. 212, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Steele Chambers come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
