The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
Reaching for Robinson left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 17 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 34th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nice patience on Troy Franklin, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at the 39th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Zach Frazier at Round 3, Pick 4 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in pick 79, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in pick No. 103. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Layden Robinson this early at Round 4, Pick 32. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jordan Travis in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke McCaffrey at pick 150. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in the 159th pick: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Jared Wiley enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 188. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Andru Phillips at the 197th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
JD Bertrand slipping to pick No. 206 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jawhar Jordan in slot 227 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Sheridan Jones in No. 228, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Somehow Omar Speights was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A clean, defensible pick in the 232nd pick with a little surplus value in J.J. Weaver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Aaron Frost at the 249th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
