New England Patriots

The Patriots bet the future on Daniels. The board says B+.

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.

Reaching for Robinson left real value on the table behind him. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.

A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In No. 5 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.17 · Pick 17 · Jared Verse · DE-EDGE · rank 16
In slot 17 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 36
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at the 34th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 25
Nice patience on Troy Franklin, who had no business lasting to the Round 2 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
By-the-book stuff, Tyler Guyton at the 39th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 63
Zach Frazier at Round 3, Pick 4 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 83
They paid sticker price for Braden Fiske in pick 79, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Khyree Jackson · CB · rank 105
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in pick No. 103. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 167
They left a pile of value on the table to take Layden Robinson this early at Round 4, Pick 32. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Jordan Travis · QB · rank 136
Jordan Travis in the Round 5 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.14 · Pick 150 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 141
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Luke McCaffrey at pick 150. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint · WR · rank 147
A quiet steal in the 159th pick: Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.13 · Pick 188 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 205
They liked Jared Wiley enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 188. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.22 · Pick 197 · Andru Phillips · CB · rank 170
Andru Phillips at the 197th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
R6.31 · Pick 206 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 195
JD Bertrand slipping to pick No. 206 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R7.7 · Pick 227 · Jawhar Jordan · RB · rank 209
Jawhar Jordan in slot 227 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
R7.8 · Pick 228 · Sheridan Jones · CB · rank 221
Good price on Sheridan Jones in No. 228, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 208
Somehow Omar Speights was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · J.J. Weaver · LB-EDGE · rank 228
A clean, defensible pick in the 232nd pick with a little surplus value in J.J. Weaver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.29 · Pick 249 · Aaron Frost · OT · rank 249
Aaron Frost at the 249th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
