New England Patriots

About as clean as a draft gets for the Patriots: A-.

Future A+

It is a puzzling start. The Patriots had interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots to solve and reached instead for Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE, at the 116th overall pick. The board rewarded a patient, disciplined weekend with a A-.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Robinson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The veteran additions, Devin White chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

Bottom line, with Dallas Turner leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.19 · Pick 19 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 13
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a premier pass rusher. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 32
No edge and no loss on Emeka Egbuka in pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 36
Chris Braswell at No. 43 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Sedrick Van Pran · C · rank 91
They jumped the gun on Sedrick Van Pran, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 94
A premium they did not need to pay, Zak Zinter a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 104
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Audric Estime. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Cade Stover · TE-EDGE · rank 127
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman, safety and other spots still to address, they spent the 116th overall pick on Cade Stover, a TE-EDGE they were not short of.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 155
Darius Robinson at the 139th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.26 · Pick 162 · Malik Washington · WR · rank 158
Malik Washington in Round 5, Pick 26 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.7 · Pick 182 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 184
By-the-book stuff, AJ Barner at the 182nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
