The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Every board in the league had Milton III lower, and that gap is the story. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Trust the process, because this time the process plainly worked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They took Ladd McConkey at par in No. 34, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia at pick No. 52 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They let Mike Sainristil come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 19. A minor itch, scratched.
Christian Mahogany is a better player than the 114th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
James Williams at pick 137 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Nothing to complain about; Luke McCaffrey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joe Milton III this early at slot 180. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jordan Jefferson at the Round 6 slot is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 231st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
