The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
On value alone, McCaffrey makes the weekend a net positive. Every board in the league had Milton III lower, and that gap is the story. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
In slot 23 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Brian Thomas Jr. in Round 2, Pick 2 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Xavier Worthy at pick 68 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A straight-up fair deal on Max Melton at the 72nd overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid up for Dallin Holker at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They robbed the room for Luke McCaffrey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Joe Milton III in the 180th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Caedan Wallace in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Jalen Coker at the 231st pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
