There is conviction, and then there is this. The Chiefs took Tyrone Tracy Jr. a full 26 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Kiran Amegadjie at par in pick No. 64, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid up for Andru Phillips at the 67th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Washington at Round 3, Pick 14 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a wide receiver like Javon Baker reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyrone Tracy Jr.. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A quiet steal in the 131st pick: Hunter Nourzad for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Dallin Holker in slot 159; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Cornelius Johnson come to them and pounced at the 173rd pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Tylan Grable at pick 221, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
