The rest of the league will want that one back. Christian Haynes tumbling to the Commanders in Round 3, Pick 37 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.5
· Pick 5
· Brock Bowers
· TE
· rank 6
In the Round 1 slot they get a seam-stretching tight end at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Graham Barton
· OT
· rank 32
A clean, defensible pick in pick 36 with a little surplus value in Graham Barton. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Chop Robinson
· DE-EDGE
· rank 39
Chop Robinson in No. 40 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Caelen Carson
· CB
· rank 67
They paid sticker price for Caelen Carson in the 67th overall pick, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Ricky Pearsall
· WR
· rank 73
No drama and no debate, Ricky Pearsall went about where he belonged in Round 3, Pick 5. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Christian Haynes
· OG
· rank 77
Christian Haynes in pick No. 100 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Cade Stover
· TE-EDGE
· rank 93
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Cade Stover at TE-EDGE with interior defensive lineman open.
R5.5
· Pick 141
· Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
· WR
· rank 143
By-the-book stuff, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at the 141st pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.6
· Pick 181
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 162
The board fumbled Joe Milton III all the way to pick No. 181, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R7.3
· Pick 223
· Blake Watson
· RB
· rank 218
Blake Watson in the 223rd pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
