The phones were a trap the Dolphins kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
Bo Nix gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They will need Spann-Ford to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through running back. The Wingo value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a blindside protector. A real need, handled.
In the 25th pick they get a long-term answer under center, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Ennis Rakestraw Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Braden Fiske in No. 45, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Nubin slipping to slot 55 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Circle this one: Mekhi Wingo at pick 126 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Trevin Wallace in the 158th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Khristian Boyd in pick No. 184; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ryan Flournoy at slot 198 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Brevyn Spann-Ford at Round 7, Pick 21, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
