You can draft well and still miss the point. The 49ers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to running back, which was the need that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The Hunter pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
The board had Lee Hunter higher than pick No. 58, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Harold Perkins Jr. in the 127th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They let Bishop Fitzgerald come to them and pounced at Round 4, Pick 33. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, CJ Daniels at pick 138 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Oscar Delp in slot 139 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
