The war room fell hard for DeMonte Capehart, and it showed at Round 7, Pick 22: 33 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while linebacker, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 13 they get juice off the edge at fair value.
In pick 24 they get a cornerstone up front, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 56 on Chris Braswell with linebacker, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
Roman Wilson in the 77th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Leonard Taylor III at Round 3, Pick 24 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kris Abrams-Draine at the 113th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Will Shipley at No. 125 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value said wait; Christian Jones in Round 5, Pick 37 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Myles Jones at par in the 213th pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, DeMonte Capehart well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
