You build a draft on nights like this. Rome Odunze had no business being available in slot 55, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
The cost of the Tagovailoa reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a wrecking ball inside, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Taking Rome Odunze in pick No. 55 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Troy Fautanu reach pick 61 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Roger Rosengarten slid further than he should have, and the 157th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Erick All at the 183rd pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Drake Nugent. It fills a real need, too.
Somehow Walter Rouse was still sitting there in No. 204, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taulia Tagovailoa in slot 241 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
