Green Bay Packers

A solid, sensible weekend for the Packers: B-.

You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Braelon Allen in Round 4, Pick 30. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, tight end and other spots still on the board. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.5 · Pick 37 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 34
Kamren Kinchens in the Round 2 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 37
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in pick No. 38. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Tyler Guyton · OT · rank 40
They took Tyler Guyton at par in the 39th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 57
Edgerrin Cooper at pick 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 70
Trey Benson at the 60th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 65
They did well to land Caelen Carson in slot 68, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 87
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 74
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 86
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Marist Liufau while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 121
They jumped the gun on Darius Robinson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.28 · Pick 128 · Drake Nugent · C · rank 148
Drake Nugent in slot 128 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 155
Braelon Allen at the 130th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
