The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Braelon Allen, taking him 33 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.2 · Pick 34 · Quinyon Mitchell · CB · rank 31
A tidy little value on Quinyon Mitchell in slot 34, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 47
They liked Patrick Paul enough to skip the value, taking him in the 39th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 51
Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 15 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 56
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in pick 58. A minor itch, scratched.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 68
No edge and no loss on Trey Benson in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 73
Johnny Wilson at pick No. 73 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 86
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent the 75th overall pick on Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE they were not short of.
R4.23 · Pick 123 · James Williams · S · rank 135
A reach on James Williams in the 123rd pick; the board had better options right there. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
This one needs a full-page explanation: Braelon Allen in the Round 4 slot, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
