It is the swing that defines the weekend: Trevin Wallace in No. 153, a good 80 spots before the room expected him.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Bullock pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Melton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Exactly the need they had to hit.
T.J. Tampa at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javon Bullard at pick 45 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Edgerrin Cooper in Round 2, Pick 18; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kingsley Suamataia. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on Zach Frazier at the 56th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They took Patrick Paul at par in the 70th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Calen Bullock while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
A premium they did not need to pay, Trey Benson a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy bit of business in No. 86, where Max Melton graded well above the range. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in Round 3, Pick 27, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Cole Bishop in pick 100 leaves quarterback for later.
No drama and no debate, Braelon Allen went about where he belonged in the Round 4 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
By-the-book stuff, Maason Smith at slot 106 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Cedric Gray, a linebacker that was not the priority.
They paid up for Johnny Wilson at the Round 4 slot when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Theo Johnson at the 116th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Cole well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
