Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Aamil Wagner at slot 135 is 36 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. It is not that Wagner is a bad player; it is that the Steelers had louder needs to answer first.
The Everette pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
So much rides on Carnell Tate that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Carnell Tate come to them and pounced at No. 21. The roster fit checks out.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emmanuel Pregnon at pick No. 53. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kamari Ramsey slid further than he should have, and the Round 3 slot is lovely value for the safety. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Daylen Everette at the 99th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, edge rusher and other spots to take Aamil Wagner, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
They read the board right and Chris McClellan was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 11. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Nate Boerkircher went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 21. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Zavion Thomas. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Nwankpa in No. 230 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Aiden Fisher slipping to pick 237 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
