Somebody in the 121st overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Kamari Ramsey, the No. 74 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If Wagner pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 29th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Emmanuel Pregnon at Round 2, Pick 21. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
The board had Josiah Trotter higher than pick 74, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Malachi Fields in pick No. 76, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Domonique Orange slipping to No. 85 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Daylen Everette at slot 99 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Kamari Ramsey in the 121st pick, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Aamil Wagner in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
A straight-up fair deal on Nate Boerkircher at pick No. 161, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Sawyer Robertson at pick 216 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Zavion Thomas went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 7 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Bryce Foster at No. 237 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
