The Isaiah Jatta pick is the one that will follow the Steelers into the fall. They took him 52 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
However the rest shakes out, Everette at that price is a win they earned. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 21 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that.
Steal is underselling it; Dillon Thieneman at the 53rd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Keylan Rutledge. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They let Bryce Lance come to them and pounced at pick 108. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They will replay Skyler Bell at Round 4, Pick 11 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Taking Daylen Everette in the Round 4 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They liked Chris McClellan enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 135. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Drew Allar in the 161st pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Isaiah Jatta in pick No. 216 says they were not listening. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A reach for Zavion Thomas in pick 224; a little patience would have been rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Jimmy Rolder in the 237th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tight end of that caliber at Round 7, Pick 40 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Jam Miller in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
