Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Steelers were there to profit. Chase Bisontis, the No. 70 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 4, Pick 21.
The Sturdivant reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Steelers indulged a want in Bisontis while a need in edge rusher and running back stayed open.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Arvell Reese was the payoff at slot 21. A need, and now a little less of one.
A tidy bit of business in the 53rd overall pick, where Emmanuel Pregnon graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Steal is underselling it; Christen Miller at No. 76 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow Emmanuel McNeil-Warren was still sitting there in pick No. 85, and they pounced on premier safety value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Germie Bernard at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and running back to take Chase Bisontis, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Aamil Wagner. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Ephesians Prysock at Round 5, Pick 9 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
VJ Payne at No. 161 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A quarterback of that caliber at slot 224 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Miles Kitselman at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J. Michael Sturdivant well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
