If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Steelers, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. The cost of the Spears-Jennings reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Kilgore.
In the end it comes back to Dillon Thieneman, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick-by-Pick
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Dillon Thieneman in No. 53, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Nice patience on Emmanuel Pregnon, who had no business lasting to slot 54. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board had Christen Miller higher than pick 65, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A cornerback of that caliber at the 121st pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
CJ Daniels in Round 4, Pick 35 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
VJ Payne in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Miles Kitselman at par in pick No. 216, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Sawyer Robertson in the 224th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A slide stopped in the Round 7 slot, with Zavion Thomas worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Robert Spears-Jennings at slot 237 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
