Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the 49ers spent pick 58 on Billy Schrauth, a name most had 61 spots down the list.
On value alone, Kilgore makes the weekend a net positive. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though the board says they badly overpaid. The biggest hole, addressed.
A big swing on Billy Schrauth at slot 58, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Jalon Kilgore in No. 127 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A tight end of that caliber at pick No. 133 is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A conviction pick on Mikail Kamara at pick 138 that the board grades a round light. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 4, Pick 39 with a little surplus value in Harold Perkins Jr.. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
