Somebody in pick No. 224 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Steelers sat still while Cade Klubnik, the No. 141 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Cruz Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get an enforcer at safety, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
CJ Allen in slot 53 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Omar Cooper Jr. at the 76th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Gennings Dunker in the 85th overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Circle this one: Christen Miller at pick No. 99 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Malik Muhammad at Round 4, Pick 21 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Domonique Orange was still sitting there in the Round 4 slot, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nate Boerkircher. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let a linebacker like Kaleb Elarms-Orr reach the 216th pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Cade Klubnik in the 224th overall pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Zavion Thomas at par in pick 230, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Enrique Cruz Jr. at Round 7, Pick 21 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
