Thirty-one other rooms let Germie Bernard slide, and the Steelers were the ones holding the card at the Round 4 slot. Highway robbery. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Whatever Ty Simpson becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
They are betting Wagner proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ty Simpson in slot 21. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They will replay Denzel Boston at No. 53 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Emmanuel Pregnon at the 76th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 85th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taking CJ Allen in pick 99 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Kamari Ramsey at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Germie Bernard still on the board at slot 135. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They jumped the gun on Aamil Wagner, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They robbed the room for Ephesians Prysock here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Nwankpa. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Toriano Pride Jr. in pick 230, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Miles Kitselman at slot 237 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
