Somebody in No. 183 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Giants sat still while Cedric Gray, the No. 142 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. Travis has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 9 of the wish list covered.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Newton in pick No. 37. The roster fit checks out.
By-the-book stuff, Jermaine Burton at the 54th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Jordan Travis in No. 69, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in Round 4, Pick 5: Blake Fisher for less than the market said. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for MarShawn Lloyd in slot 142, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cedric Gray in the 183rd pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
