You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Braelon Allen in the 117th pick.
It is not that Bullard is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
A conviction pick on Edgerrin Cooper at the 50th pick that the board grades a round light. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Calen Bullock higher than slot 54, and the safety fell to them anyway. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They went early on Trey Benson in Round 2, Pick 25, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 65 on Javon Bullard with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
By-the-book stuff, Johnny Wilson at the Round 3 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went DT-EDGE with Maason Smith while clear needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots sat open.
Khyree Jackson in No. 101 is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach on Darius Robinson in the 105th overall pick; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in Round 4, Pick 17 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Beaux Limmer in slot 119 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
