The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 44 spots for Myles Cole, and value like that does not grow back. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. It is not that Bullock is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
They banked enough surplus on Bullock to cover a lot of smaller sins.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They jumped the gun on Kingsley Suamataia, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Zach Frazier in No. 58 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Javon Bullard went about where he belonged in slot 60. A minor itch, scratched.
A wild overpay on Trey Benson in the 67th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in slot 72; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 91st overall pick on Calen Bullock with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in pick 92, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Cedric Gray, a linebacker that was not the priority.
A conviction pick on Johnny Wilson at the 113th pick that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
Isaac Guerendo at Round 4, Pick 14 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at the 116th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jarrian Jones in pick 125 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They went early on Mason McCormick in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A want over a need in No. 135: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while quarterback, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
They reached a country mile for Myles Cole at pick No. 154, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevin Wallace this early at slot 189. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
