Green Bay Packers

The Packers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B.

The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 44 spots for Myles Cole, and value like that does not grow back. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. It is not that Bullock is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.

They banked enough surplus on Bullock to cover a lot of smaller sins.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.4 · Pick 36 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 38
By-the-book stuff, Darius Robinson at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 47
Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 41 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.17 · Pick 49 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 57
They jumped the gun on Kingsley Suamataia, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 59
Zach Frazier in No. 58 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 58
No drama and no debate, Javon Bullard went about where he belonged in slot 60. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 88
A wild overpay on Trey Benson in the 67th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in slot 72; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Calen Bullock · S · rank 82
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 91st overall pick on Calen Bullock with quarterback, tight end and other spots unsolved.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 97
They paid sticker price for Brenden Rice in pick 92, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 112
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with quarterback, tight end and other spots open.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Cole Bishop · S · rank 105
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots untouched.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 107
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braelon Allen. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 115
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, tight end and other spots to take Cedric Gray, a linebacker that was not the priority.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 126
A conviction pick on Johnny Wilson at the 113th pick that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 129
Isaac Guerendo at Round 4, Pick 14 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 120
A straight-up fair deal on Javon Foster at the 116th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 137
Jarrian Jones in pick 125 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 146
They went early on Mason McCormick in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.35 · Pick 135 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 171
A want over a need in No. 135: Malik Mustapha adds a safety while quarterback, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 198
They reached a country mile for Myles Cole at pick No. 154, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.14 · Pick 189 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trevin Wallace this early at slot 189. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
