Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Ravens spent the 250th pick on Marvin Jones Jr., a name the board had a full 87 spots lower.
Slaughter falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Emmanuel Pregnon at pick 45 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Eli Stowers in No. 47, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Keionte Scott at slot 80 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Steal is underselling it; Jake Slaughter at the 95th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ja'Kobi Lane in the Round 4 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tim Keenan III at pick No. 154 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Zxavian Harris in Round 5, Pick 16, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nothing to complain about; Demond Claiborne went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach on Keagen Trost in pick No. 173; the board had better options right there. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Domani Jackson at pick 174, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Le'Veon Moss was the payoff at slot 211. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Marvin Jones Jr., and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Trey Zuhn III is a better player than the 253rd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
