You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Sai'vion Jones in the Round 3 slot. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The Edwards value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get a run-stuffing presence up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid a round early for JT Tuimoloau in pick No. 38, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sai'vion Jones in pick 69, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Xavier Restrepo in slot 77. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nice patience on Gunnar Helm, who had no business lasting to the Round 4 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jack Kiser at the 145th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Circle this one: Jack Nelson at the Round 7 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jabbar Muhammad. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Donovan Edwards at the 240th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
