You can hear the double-takes from here. The Dolphins took Eric O'Neill at slot 188, roughly 71 spots before his name belonged.
That Slaughter pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Tyler Guyton pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a three-down runner, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
In the 30th overall pick they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
In slot 32 they get a ballhawk on the outside. Need was not the driver here.
Emmanuel Pregnon at the 43rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
A.J. Haulcy at No. 87 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Bryce Lance in pick No. 91 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Sam Roush in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They robbed the room for Jake Slaughter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Mason Reiger, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on J.C. Davis at slot 130 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
Charles Demmings at the 151st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
By-the-book stuff, Louis Moore at the 168th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric O'Neill. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jalon Daniels at pick No. 227 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Jack Kelly at pick No. 238, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
