The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Michael Penix Jr., and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Sanders reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Tight end is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Tyler Guyton in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Kris Jenkins at No. 40 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Ja'Tavion Sanders in pick No. 43, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Christian Haynes at the 67th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Dominick Puni in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Khyree Jackson in the 103rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cedric Gray in Round 5, Pick 2 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Michael Wiley in No. 181 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 220 with a little surplus value in Jase McClellan. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
