The Dolphins spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jake Golday, the No. 59 name on the board, in the 130th overall pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
They will need Fano to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 11 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Caleb Banks a notch or two before his time. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Dillon Thieneman at the Round 2 slot is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They paid a round early for Kyle Louis in No. 75, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Sam Roush at the 87th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
They took Skyler Bell at par in slot 90, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Garrett Nussmeier come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 30. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jake Golday at the 130th pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Hezekiah Masses, who had no business lasting to Round 5, Pick 11. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They reached a country mile for Logan Fano at the 227th pick, and the board is aghast. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Chase Roberts in slot 238 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
