Thirty-one other rooms let Kalel Mullings slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at pick No. 238. Highway robbery. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The Sanders pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Josh Conerly Jr. at par in No. 38, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dylan Fairchild slid further than he should have, and Round 3, Pick 5 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Donovan Jackson in the 77th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Steal is underselling it; Barrett Carter at the 104th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Shilo Sanders in the Round 5 slot, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at pick No. 217 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Chris Paul Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Taking Kalel Mullings in slot 238 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
