New England Patriots

A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots did not so much draft Marvin Jones Jr. as overpay for him, 145 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.

On value alone, Coogan makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · R Mason Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 33
In pick No. 31 they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Michael Taaffe · S · rank 68
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Taaffe at the 63rd pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Ted Hurst · WR · rank 89
Ted Hurst in Round 3, Pick 31 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Caleb Douglas · WR · rank 165
Caleb Douglas at No. 125 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Reggie Virgil · WR · rank 167
They talked themselves into Reggie Virgil at pick 131, and the board did not agree. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Aamil Wagner · OT · rank 173
They took Aamil Wagner at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Marvin Jones Jr. · LB-EDGE · rank 336
Value said wait; Marvin Jones Jr. in slot 191 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Marlin Klein · TE · rank 158
Marlin Klein at the Round 6 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Dominic Zvada · PK · rank 301
Dominic Zvada in the 202nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Anez Cooper · OG · rank 186
Steal is underselling it; Anez Cooper at the 212th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Pat Coogan · C · rank 200
The board fumbled Pat Coogan all the way to Round 7, Pick 31, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
