Somebody in the 56th overall pick was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Cowboys sat still while Kool-Aid McKinstry, the No. 25 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want. They will need Paul to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but linebacker.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 9, where Adonai Mitchell graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kool-Aid McKinstry in pick 56 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Patrick Paul at pick No. 58 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Mike Sainristil at No. 87 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
