The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 106th pick on Tyreak Sapp a full 159 spots early.
Getting Gordon II where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
The Sapp pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, cornerback and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left wide receiver open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a bell-cow for the offense at fair value. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 13 they get a double-digit-sack hope, though they paid up to get him.
A real head-scratcher, Alfred Collins in the 39th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Malachi Moore at the 44th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jake Majors. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They talked themselves into Jay Higgins at the Round 3 slot, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cam Skattebo at slot 78 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.

DJ Campbell in the 168th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Thor Griffith this early at No. 170. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They reached a country mile for Omari Thomas at Round 5, Pick 34, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Ollie Gordon II in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
