The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. The All pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. Tampa has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A real need, handled.
T.J. Tampa at pick 36 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in the 40th overall pick, with Jackson Powers-Johnson worth more than the price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Kiran Amegadjie at Round 3, Pick 3 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Brandon Dorlus in No. 78 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Tommy Eichenberg in pick No. 139; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sione Vaki. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A tight end of that caliber at No. 222 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
