Flashes of a plan, unevenly run, for the Patriots: C+.

Nobody else had Nick Barrett anywhere near No. 191. The Patriots did, by 63 spots, and that gap is the whole story. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.

The wide receiver hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

So much rides on Gabe Jacas that the real verdict is a season or two away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Gabe Jacas · LB-EDGE · rank 52
In pick No. 31 they get a premier pass rusher, a steep price for the projection. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Keyron Crawford · DE-EDGE · rank 116
This one needs a full-page explanation: Keyron Crawford in the 63rd pick, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Jude Bowry · OT · rank 129
A big swing on Jude Bowry at No. 95, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jack Endries · TE · rank 121
A clean, defensible pick in slot 125 with a little surplus value in Jack Endries. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Hezekiah Masses · CB · rank 138
By-the-book stuff, Hezekiah Masses at pick 131 squarely in line with his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Jeremiah Wright · OG · rank 218
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jeremiah Wright. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Nick Barrett · DL · rank 254
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nick Barrett well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Keyshaun Elliott · LB · rank 219
Keyshaun Elliott at pick No. 198 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Aiden Fisher · LB · rank 230
Value said wait; Aiden Fisher in slot 202 says they were not listening. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Kaelon Black · RB · rank 217
Kaelon Black at the 212th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Nolan Rucci · OT · rank 253
They paid sticker price for Nolan Rucci in pick 247, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
