You can draft well and still miss the point. The Chargers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
On value alone, McCaffrey makes the weekend a net positive. Every board in the league had Van Pran lower, and that gap is the story.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at pick No. 37, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Sedrick Van Pran at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Zak Zinter at pick 106 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Nehemiah Pritchett in Round 5, Pick 3, just ahead of his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a wide receiver like Luke McCaffrey reach the 183rd pick and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Frank Gore Jr. in slot 223, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy little value on Ethan Driskell in pick No. 256, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
