Somebody in pick 240 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Patriots sat still while RJ Harvey, the No. 170 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Bryant to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 19 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Maxwell Hairston. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Devin Neal at pick No. 69 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Ozzy Trapilo at the 105th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
They reached a country mile for Cobee Bryant at pick 145, and the board is aghast. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Jack Kiser in No. 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Jordan Hancock is a better player than slot 222 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking RJ Harvey in the Round 7 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
