The trade table was a mismatch, and the Bears were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Williams to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Starks.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Malaki Starks at the 39th pick is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
They read the board right and Omarion Hampton was the payoff at pick No. 41. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Jihaad Campbell in the 44th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It fills a real need, too.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jack Bech in No. 72. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board had cheaper options than Charles Grant at pick 76, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bhayshul Tuten. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 171; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Clay Webb at Round 5, Pick 36 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
John Williams at pick No. 240 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
