When the story of this class is written, it opens with Drake Nugent at No. 174, a reach of 39 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Getting Johnson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at the 24th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in No. 56, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Bucky Irving at slot 87 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Drake Nugent in the 174th overall pick says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Cornelius Johnson at pick No. 216 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached into another round for Jowon Briggs, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Sheridan Jones in Round 7, Pick 24 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
