There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Caden Curry a full 38 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. The Golday pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback, running back and other spots still on the board. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a lockdown presence outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In pick 31 they get juice off the edge, reach and all. Need was not the driver here.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Jake Golday, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Caden Curry in pick No. 92 leaves quarterback, running back and other spots for later.
No edge and no loss on Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nothing to complain about; Aamil Wagner went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Febechi Nwaiwu in Round 5, Pick 40. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Harrison Wallace III at No. 218 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
