The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: CJ Allen, the No. 31 name on the board, sitting there at slot 62 like a gift left on the doorstep. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The Perkins Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. With quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They talked themselves into Malachi Lawrence at the 49th pick, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They will replay CJ Allen at the 62nd pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Circle this one: Michael Taaffe at No. 92 is a fall that decides a draft. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Harold Perkins Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the 112th overall pick on Zakee Wheatley with quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dametrious Crownover at slot 152. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bryce Boettcher at pick No. 177 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Marlin Klein come to them and pounced at the Round 5 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board had Tyren Montgomery higher than Round 7, Pick 2, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
