Nobody else had Caden Curry anywhere near No. 92. The Cowboys did, by 40 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
They banked enough surplus on Cameron to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
It is not that Curry is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a two-high chess piece, even if it was a touch early.
Nothing to complain about; CJ Allen went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Lawrence at the 49th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
D'Angelo Ponds slid further than he should have, and No. 59 is lovely value for the cornerback. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A curious use of pick 92. Quarterback, running back and other spots needed the pick; an edge rusher in Caden Curry did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Harold Perkins Jr. this early at pick No. 106. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Value with a capital V on Caleb Douglas in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Travis Burke in slot 180 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Josh Cameron at the 218th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
