The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jaishawn Barham at No. 62 regardless, 59 picks early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. They banked enough surplus on Anderson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
The Cowboys indulged a want in Barham while a need in quarterback and interior defensive lineman stayed open. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a sticky cover corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get juice off the edge, reach and all.
By-the-book stuff, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at slot 49 squarely in line with his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback and interior defensive lineman to take Jaishawn Barham, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Zakee Wheatley in the 89th overall pick leaves quarterback and interior defensive lineman for later.
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Muhammad at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Harold Perkins Jr. in pick No. 97 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Bryce Boettcher at pick 108 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Aamil Wagner was the payoff at the Round 5 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Marlin Klein at Round 5, Pick 40 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Aaron Anderson was still sitting there in slot 196, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in No. 218, with Kaelon Black worth more than the price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
