The Chiefs torched the value chart for George Gumbs Jr., taking him 46 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Everette pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board.
Stowers at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a disruptive interior force. A clean fit for the roster.
They liked Zion Young enough to skip the value, taking him in the 29th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Brandon Cisse in slot 40, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Eli Stowers at pick No. 74 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A surprising call. With quarterback still to address, they spent the Round 3 slot on Daylen Everette, a cornerback they were not short of.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dametrious Crownover this early at Round 4, Pick 9. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kaytron Allen. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: George Gumbs Jr. in No. 148, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Jeff Caldwell in pick 152 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the 169th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No drama and no debate, Aaron Anderson went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They went early on Jeremiah Wright in Round 6, Pick 29, and the value did not follow. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
