Nobody had Jalen Sundell this high, and it is not close. The Chiefs reached 51 spots to get him at pick No. 195.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They took Patrick Paul at par in pick 64, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Khyree Jackson in No. 98, and that is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Theo Johnson at the 132nd pick is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Walter Rouse went about where he belonged in the 159th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had cheaper options than Tahj Washington at pick No. 173, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A wild overpay on Jalen Sundell in slot 195, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
By-the-book stuff, Kimani Vidal at No. 252 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
